Who we are
We’re Helen and Leo — a mother and son exploring the world from the cozy heart of our motorhome, Benny. Our story is one of love, laughter, and the lucky few.
Leo’s diagnosis of Down syndrome (Trisomy 21) means that change can often be overwhelming, making holidays or time away from home deregulating for Leo. I decided to hire a motorhome to see if the open road could offer the freedom we craved — without the stress. It did. With Leo’s familiar things around him, the world became a little easier to navigate. The only thing that changed was the view outside the window. Leo was also delighted about riding up front (and having complete control of the stereo) and we would sing and sign our way along our adventures. It then became a goal to buy one of our own.
In December 2024, we made the dream our reality. We bought Benny, rolled up our sleeves, and gave him a new floor, a warm bathroom, and a living space that feels like a hug. Benny’s more than a vehicle — he’s our home, our haven, and the beginning, middle and end of every new adventure.
As we travel, I teach Leo life skills, foster independence, and fill our days with love, learning and of course, music! Living in a small space means being organised, tidy, and thoughtful — and Leo’s absolutely thriving. Whether he’s helping set up camp, packing away with pride, or waving like royalty at passing other drivers en route, Leo spreads joy like sparks from a campfire.
He’s funny, kind, and full of sunshine. Music runs through him like a heartbeat — always dancing, always singing, always lifting the mood. His biggest goal in life is simple and beautiful: he just wants everyone to be happy.
We share our journey not just to document our days, but to raise awareness about Down syndrome, inclusion and accessibility. Most of the places we visit go above and beyond to accommodate Leo’s needs — and we’re endlessly grateful for that. But sometimes, people look past him. They don’t smile. They don’t see. And while Leo rarely shows hurt, I feel it deeply. I protect him, shield his heart when I can, and advocate always.
This space is about sharing meals made from fresh local produce, reviewing how inclusive the world really is, and showing how extraordinary life can be when you embrace the extra.
My new dream is that Leo will take over this page himself one day, but he has been a huge part of this blog already. Choosing pictures, reading the text and picking the music, so please know he is beaming with pride at the idea of sharing our lives with you.
Thanks for being here. We’re so glad you found us.
